Friends of the Library PRESS RELEASE - September 19, 2007

When the Friends get together, you can be sure of seeing big smiles. The Friends of the Library work very hard to raise money for the Madoc Public Library, but it’s really fun to give it away!

On August 29th, President Claudine Prosper arrived at the library to present a $1,000.00 cheque to Susan Smith. Claudine brought with her the three founder members of the Friends, Betty Tennant, Avril Sexton and Brian Sexton. Claudine says the founders are real pioneers, because their early work in forming the Friends group has resulted in ongoing financial support for the library. Next time you stroll around the library, check out the Cultural Centre furniture and the Children’s furniture. All were donations from the F.O.L.

In the last year, treasurer Avril Sexton says the Friends have donated over $6,000.00 to the library for books, microfiche entry, computer and monitor and magazine subscriptions.

Librarian Susan Smith thanked the Friends for their donation and took the opportunity to show them the new Madoc Public Library website. The F.O.L. is paying for hosting and the domain name registration for this site. Included on this site is information about the hours of operation, staff and board members, an up to date catalogue of all books available, as well as a ‘News Page’ for upcoming events. There is a history of the establishment of the library in the early 1900s, written by Rita Sporring, who at one time was the librarian.

The staff are very excited about this site because of the improved services it will offer the members. The site is still in its’ infancy, but later it is anticipated that library members will be able to do such things as renew their books on line. Check out www.madocpubliclibrary.com where you will also find F.O.L. news.
