Corn Boil at O'Hara Mills - August 25, 2005

It was a good turn out for the Corn Boil at the O'Hara Mill Pioneer Village on August the 26th.  With plenty of corn, provided by Gunnings from Tweed and Vander Ploueg from Madoc, hamburgers, hotdogs and sausages, everyone was well fed.  I especially liked the taste of the corn Ross Moorcroft boiled that had maple syrup in the water, donated by the Maple Fest Committee from the Medical Center, in a one of the two cauldrons over open flames.  That was some of the sweetest, juiciest corn that I have ever tasted.

After a good meal, everyone settled down for entertainment on the newly constructed stage beside the old carriage house.  The evenings entertainers were Norm Brownlie, his daughter Heather, and Al Murack.  Al and Norm played guitar and sang good old songs and some sweet sounding gospel.  Heather's voice was something to hear, sweet and strong with incredible range!  I would compare it to an opera singer's voice in pitch and tone or an angel's if I had ever heard one sing.  The crowd could not get enough of them and kept calling out for more.

I had a blast and all the proceeds went towards the upkeep and expansion of the O'Hara Mill Village. It was a win-win situation.  I hope that the next big event at the Mill, called the "Doors Open Ontario Heritage Tour" on October 1st and 2nd, will shed even more light on this picturesque little Village, just like this Corn Boil did.  Till then, we should consider ourselves blessed to have such an extraordinary historical place in Comfort Country.
