Centre Hastings Park Update

Over the past two years our small community in the Municipality of Centre Hastings has raised over $350 000 towards the construction of a large concrete skatepark, a small bunny skatepark, and a canteen with washroom facilities. We have raised this money through contributions from the Municipality of Centre Hastings, Ontario Trillium Foundation, Community Futures, and many generous donations from businesses, corporations, and individuals in our community. Our youth raised $27 000 and continue to take pride in their park.

We have created one of the finest family skateparks anywhere. We are the envy of many communities across the country. Our park is featured in the latest issue of Concrete Powder, a guide to Canadian Skateparks. As a result of this exposure we expect the park to be busier than ever this summer, bringing even more families to our small community.

The following activities are taking place this summer:

• The park is being supervised from May 1^st – Oct 9^th 2006 during peak hours during the day and evening.

• The canteen and washrooms will be open during these times.

• A summer program for youth from the ages of 5-12 will be offered for 6 weeks during the summer.

• One adult and six youth will be hired for the operation of these programs.

This brings us to the final phase of the park project.

The Municipality and the Park Committee have committed to adding a playground to the park to complete the facility and make it an even bigger attraction for all ages! The proposed playground will be on the same grand scale as our skatepark. We have chosen unique equipment that will accommodate children aged two to twelve, and will be wheelchair accessible. Our philosophy is to provide uniqueness and quality, and send the message that our youth are valued members of our community.

The projected completion date of the playground is June 30^th, 2006. Several fundraising events are already underway. To date, we have received $50 000 from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, $10 000 from Community Futures, $2500 from TD Canada Trust, and several donations from groups and individuals. We have also received a financial commitment from the Municipality. To build the playground, landscape the park, put two banks of lights in the park, and build a small pavilion near the bunny park, we need to raise $80 000 by the end of June 2006.

We have no doubt that this project will enrich family life in our community and continue to promote prosperity in our area.
