On Monday night, July 19, the Hastings Stewardship Council took their regular summer meeting on the road and visited the O'Hara Mill Homestead in Madoc Township.  O'Hara Volunteers Association president, Dave Little, welcomed the members of the Stewardship Council who, along with their
spouses, then toured the various buildings.  Costumed guides gave the guests
tours of the buildings and gardens including the mill, which was in operation.  Following an old-fashioned evening meal of hardy beef stew , home made bread and pie, President Cliff McLean from the Stewardship Council
was effusive in his praise of the work accomplished by the O'Hara Volunteers
Association in preserving and restoring this important historic site.  Many favourable comments were received from members of the council during and after the tour.  Those who had not seen the homestead in several years expressed their amazement at the work accomplished by the volunteers at the
homestead.

The Story by Harry Quart

"Each year, the Regatta Committee looks for ways to improve upon the previous year.  That's proving to be quite an ongoing challenge because we have been blessed with terrific partners, generous sponsors and dedicated volunteers.  I can, without reservation, say that the 2010 7th Annual Centre Hastings Regatta was the very  best ever.  It will be hard to beat!
Everything went just as planned, right down to the weather.  The Fire Fighters provided fantastic food; they were in the water to assist racers; the OPP were there with rides for kids in their great marine unit; the
Kiwanis Club fully prepared the beach area;  Jim and Carol Murray attended to display some of the remote controlled units from the Madoc RC Club, and Dave Kyle took excellent photos of all the fun!
A couple of highlights for myself?
The prize kayak and paddle from ClearWater Design Canoes & Kayaks of Picton, Ontario was won by Brendan Haigh.  What a treat when a youth wins the grand prize!
I take personal pride in the fact that the Regatta was the first sporting activity in this area to join the True Sport movement.  Reeve Tom Deline signed the Regatta's True Sport declaration certificate, and Deputy Reeve,
Tom Simpson, presented the Regatta's first True Sport honor in recognizing Megan Lloyst as a volunteer who, over several Years, has consistently demonstrated the Principles of True Sport.  These True Sport initiatives were particularly meaningful to me.
Thanks to all for a wonderful and memorable day.
Harry

Ontario Women's Lawn Bowling  Provincial Championships

lawn bowlers

Members Pat Gemmell and Pauline Hill, from the Madoc Lawn Bowling  qualified to play in the Ontario Women's Provincial Championships. The District qualifying event took place on the weekend of June 19 and 20.

The Ontario Championships were held in Sarnia on July 3 and 4.  Sixteen teams from across Ontario were present each representing their district.  Pat and Pauline won three games on the Saturday which earned them a spot at trying for the gold medal on Sunday morning. Unfortunately they lost that game which put them in the "B" pool to try for the silver.  Winning the second game on Sunday did just that. The third game of the day they lost and ended up with the Bronze.

Pat and Pauline were pleased with their efforts considering this was their first try at the Pairs Ontario Championships.

Deputy Reeve Simpson lead the delegation of Reeve Deline and Councillor Schulz to discuss the issue of moving the proposed new entrance for the Kiwanis Boat Launch from the Hwy # 62 re-alignment project.  The case was
made that by doing so would expedite the issue of safety at the existing entrance and allow the Kiwanis to proceed with a master plan for the Kiwanis Boat Launch and Park. The Minister agreed that the project deserved further discussion and should include the highway re-alignment project Manager.

Reeve Deline introduced a second topic of perceived delays by the Provincial Government in regards to entrance approvals for proposed projects at Hwy #62 and Hwy # 7.  The Minister indicated that developers had not presented the required information at this time.

Reeve Deline commented "we had a great meeting with Minister Wynne and I have followed up with her comments with the Developer and he is almost ready to make a formal proposal to Council".

Deputy Reeve Simpson lead the delegation of Councillor Schulz and Councillor Kerby discussing the issue of more Long Term Care beds required in our area. The Minister indicated that more focus was being put on services to keep the elderly at home and freeing up beds in the hospitals. She gave no indication that more beds were being allocated in our area.

Madoc's West Highland Golf Course Commemorates Doug Hunter's Mud Slide

Next time you play golf at Madoc's West Highland course you will see a new
addition on the 7th hole; a beautifully engraved stone commemorating Doug
Hunter's less than spectacular mud spattered recovery from the bank of the
pond last Fall.

The Thursday night gang of golf buddies gathered at the site July 29 to surprise Doug with the unveiling, with the preparation work done by course owner Rob DeJong and the engraving by renowned sculptor Jim Smith.
Be sure to not only ask Doug about his mud slide, but take time to also see the back of the stone with an engraving which depicts the many  "blue words" uttered as he lay prone in the mud.... by the way he did finish the round with an impressive score. His wife Jan has attested to the fact Tide detergent truly removes all stains and mud from big kids pants and shirts as shown in their commercials.

HELP STOMP OUT HUNGER!

Hi This is Nat Moraal and I am hoping to launch my first ever fundraising idea as a summer volunteer with the foodbank, but I will need everyone's help.
Here is what I've planned:
On Fri. Aug 6th from 2-6 pm in Madoc at the Foodland Parking lot there will be our 1st ever 'Road Toll' or as I call it  'Toll Boot' in support of our 'Helping Hands Foodbank'
I have learned that Hunger does not take a holiday and I am hoping that with everyone's help we can:
'STOMP OUT HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY'
by bringing awareness that we have empty shelves yet to fill in our Foodbank ! All customers visiting the Madoc Foodland store will be asked to make any donation they can to fill the 'BOOT' (bucket) of one of the volunteers.
For more fun each volunteer will be involved in a friendly competition as they appeal for donations.Hopefully this event will be an example of fundraising at its best!
COMMITTED to this initiative are Reeve TOM DELINE, Deputy Reeve, TOM SIMPSON, WALLY SAWKINS retired Centre Hastings OPP, Robin Carscadden, president of the Market Vendors, Harry Quart, Mabel Carson and of course me Nat Moraal.
There will be surprise guests to watch for throughout the afternoon. With everyone's help I hope that 'we can raise awareness, have fun, and collect lots of donations' 'please come out and help out!' The volunteers can't be missed in their florescent caps and lime green T shirts, please watch out for them!
There will be large as well as small children's boots to fill with donations as no child in our town should go hungry.
Thanks everyone, hoping to see you there!
'MY THANKS TO LORNE AND LENORE TRAVES OF MADOC FOODLAND FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF THIS INITIATIVE'  and to my many other new friends who have suppported me along the way, this summer. natter
