Centre Hastings Donates Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms to Support Vulnerable Residents

On March 12th, 2026, Centre Hastings Fire Chief Derek Snider and Community Development Officer Brock Kerby presented a box of Kidde Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms to Executive Director Victoria Treverton of the Central Hastings Support Network.

These 2-in-1 detectors alert residents to both smoke and carbon monoxide (CO), a silent and potentially deadly gas. Many Kidde models feature a 10-year battery backup, photoelectric sensing technology to reduce false alarms from cooking, and voice alerts, making them a reliable and essential safety tool for homes with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.

The alarms, donated through the Enbridge Grant in 2025, are part of a broader initiative to help residents maintain safer homes, particularly those facing financial challenges. This effort aligns with community safety programs such as “Project Zero,” which aim to reduce fire- and CO-related deaths by providing alarms to those in need.

“By providing these detectors, we’re helping families and individuals take important steps to keep themselves and their homes safe,” said Chief Snider.

These remaining detectors are limited in supply, highlighting the importance of early access for those in need. The donation reflects Centre Hastings’ ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of all community members, particularly those for whom acquiring life-saving safety devices may be difficult.
